The purpose of life, so claimed Aristotle one of great philosophers of all time, is happiness. Individual spend time working hard to earn money. In fact many of us think that the purpose of life is wealth accumulation but in reality, the purpose of life is indeed happiness. The thing and the real question that we need to ask ourselves is how do should I look for happiness?
A great writer Anthony de Mello wrote, in his book “One Minute Wisdom”, about happiness; the narration goes:
“I am in desperate need of help or I will go crazy. We are living in a single room, my wife, my children and my in in-laws. So our nerves are on edge, we yell and scream at on another. The room is a hell”
“Do you promise to do whatever I tell you? said the Master gravely.
“I swear I shall do anything.”
“Very well. How many animals do you have?”
” A cow, a goat and six chickens.”
” Take them all into the room with you. Then come back after a week.”
The disciple was appalled. But he had promised to obey! So he took the animals in. A week later he came back, pitiable figure moaning, ” I’ am a nervous wreck. The dirt! The stench! The noise! We are all on the verge of madness!”
“Go back,” said the Master, and put the animals out.”
The man ran all the way home. And came back the following day, his eyes sparkling with joy. “How sweet life is! The animals are out. The home is a paradise so quiet and clean and roomy!”
Did you hear what the disciple said when he had two experiences of the same room? This is what should be happening with us in life. Let us open our eyes and rejoice with what we have. This does not mean that people should not work hard and be contented with what they have but rather we should all know that happiness is brought by our own decision – one decides to be happy!
